Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC)

The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964 and may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation, by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel. The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competition, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other military training. Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries are provided by the Navy.

What's It About?

Do you want to make your high school years more exciting and fun? Well, here's your chance to do just that by joining the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps [NJROTC] where you explore the intriguing world of civilian, industrial and military science and have an opportunity to sharpen your leadership skills. Discover the rich history of tomorrow’s naval technology, while at the same time honing your leadership potential.

What's In It For Me?

Enrollment in NJROTC does not require you to pursue a military obligation and is not tied to an accessions or recruiting program. It provides tools for success after high school regardless of a chosen career path. However, there are benefits available for students wishing to pursue a military avenue.

After graduation from high school as an NJROTC cadet, you will be better prepared to pursue a college education through the NJROTC program in either a technical or non-technical major. Membership in navy JROTC helps cadets build a solid background for ROTC scholarship applications available at colleges and universities across the country.

Depending on how long you belong to an NJROTC unit, you may be eligible to waive one year of the NJROTC program while in college. If your goal is to apply to a military service academy, there are avenues within the NJROTC program that will help you achieve this goal. With all other factors being equal such as grades SAT scores, community involvement, etc., your NJROTC experience provides a competitive edge over the rest of the applicants.

If going to college right after high school graduation is not for you, you may want to pursue a military career. If you complete two or three years in NJROTC, you are entitled to enter the military one to two grades higher than other enlistees.

Tell Me More

What is being in NJROTC at Riverview High School Like?

NJROTC at Riverview High School is a challenging, rewarding commitment that demands daily effort from Cadets. In addition to balancing a normal academic course load, Riverview Cadets are expected to participate in a naval science academic classwork two times a week unusually on Wednesday and Fridays participate in Battalion Physical Training (PT) twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cadets are held to a high standard of physical excellence. The cadet’s uniform symbolizes excellence when worn in the appropriate manner.  Cadets are responsible for the proper care and preservation of their uniforms and wear them all day during school once a week, on Wednesday. Cadets can participate in numerous other NJROTC related activities, such as, Drill Team and Color Guard. There are also a number of special events which cadets can participate in, such as promotion/advancement/Awards ceremonies and the Navy Ball.

As Cadet's a rise from NS1 to NS4, they take on more responsibilities within the battalion. All day-to-day functions are planned out and executed by Cadets, under the oversight of the Navy Science Instructors. Cadets are presented with copious opportunity to gain invaluable leadership experience as they rise as CADETS IN RANKS to SQUAD LEADER to PLATOON COMMANDER, and possibly even to BATTALION COMMANDER, the highest billet attainable by any Cadet, EXECUTIVE OFFICER and COMMAND MASTER CHIEF.
